From Eleonora Evi, MEP of the 5 Star Movement, italian delegation of the EFDD

We expected an opinion from the European Commission favouring the Bayer-Monsanto merger, a merger which would create a monstrous leviathan that not only produces pesticides and GMOs, but also markets drugs to cure illnesses resulting from contaminating substances, which are contained in those very same pesticides!

As expected, EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager, agreed to bow to the wishes of the multinationals, as the Juncker-led European Commission has often done on multiple occasions, the current College of Commissioners having approved more GMOs than any other previous EU executive.

This merger has significant risks for agriculture, particularly for biodiversity and food quality, and for the market issue of food sovereignty for the EU and its Member States.

Many letters to the Commission sent by representatives of the European Parliament on this issue were ignored, and also the demands of citizens who repeatedly mobilised to oppose this short-sighted vision favouring the multinationals. One can recall the millions of signatures for the ICE 'Stop Glyphosate', also ignored by the Commission.

Commissioner Margrethe Vestager stated that the merger is conditioned upon the sale of a large part of the Bayer company to third parties. We would like to know who these third parties will be, and if there are any restrictions for access to the acquisition; for example, it would be ridiculous if another German company came into play here.
