press statement

"Conflicts of interest, lack of transparency, revolving doors, no effective monitoring on lobbying activities, decision taken behind closed doors: these are just some of the issues that this Europe is avoiding to concretely tackle thus increasing mistrust and distance between citizens and European Institutions", says Eleonora Evi, Italian Member of the European Parliament for the Five Stars Movement (M5S) and rapporteur on the Annual report on the activities of the European Ombudsman Emily O'Reilly in 2017.

"European decision making process lacks transparency vis-à-vis citizens: just look at the so-called "trilogue" procedure, which is totally opaque and not accessible to them". Europe as a "glass palace" should be the lighthouse to follow to overcome any obstacle that separates people who are inside the institutions from people outside, with a view to build a European Union truly based on ethical principles, moral integrity and transparency.
In spite of all these, it's shameful that the centre-right coalition (PPE) has tabled several amendments to hide these issues from European citizens' eyes: Barroso, Juncker, Katainen, Draghi misconducts cannot be simply swept aside. The upcoming European elections are, therefore, the right opportunity to bring the change taking place in Italy also in Europe", concludes Evi.
