Press statement

"Customs duties on rice imports from Cambodia and Burma, established by the European Commission, represent a big political victory in Europe of Conte's government and of the Five Star Movement in particular. Thanks to our government, the Made in Italy is finally protected and Italy is stronger in Europe", said Tiziana Beghin, 5 Star Moviment's MEP.

"Following the publication on the Official Journal, foreign rice will be subjected to 175 EUR of customs duties per ton. Our battle to protect the Italian rice started in 2014: the producers were brought to their knees after the rice imports from Cambodia and Burma increased by 4.000%, from 5 to 386 thousands of tons in just a few years. Since then, we have never left the rice-growers alone and our uninterrupted pressure to the institutions complemented the outstanding job done by the umbrella associations. More than 4.000 enterprises and families, who are producing an Italian excellence, will be able to breathe a sigh of relief. With us, Europe changes", said Beghin.
